New top story from Time: Iraq’s Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi Formally Resigns Amid Increasing Violence

Image
(BAGHDAD) — Three anti-government protesters were shot dead and at least 58 wounded in Baghdad and southern Iraq on Saturday, security and medical officials said, as Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi formally submitted his resignation to parliament. Lawmakers were expected to either vote or accept outright Abdul-Mahdi’s resignation letter in a parliamentary session Sunday, two members of parliament said. The prime minister announced Thursday he would hand parliament his resignation on Friday amid mounting pressure from mass anti-government protests, a day after more than 40 demonstrators were killed by security forces in Baghdad and southern Iraq. The announcement also came after Iraq’s top Shiite cleric withdrew his support for the government in a weekly sermon. The formal resignation came after an emergency Cabinet session earlier in which ministers approved the document and the resignation of key staffers, including Abdul-Mahdi’s chief of staff. New top story from Time: Noose Found in Locker Brings Unrest to Mississippi Fire Department

Image
(HATTIESBURG, Miss.) — There’s little disagreement that the object found in a white Mississippi firefighter’s locker was a hangman’s noose. But as with many things in America these days, there’s deep disagreement about what it meant. To some it was a reminder of lynchings that took hundreds of black lives in Mississippi, and it had no place on city property — though there was no suggestion that firefighter Shelton Russell had ever displayed it or used it to intimidate anyone. To Russell it didn’t carry that meaning. If anything, it symbolized America’s lawless wild-west culture, where cowboy vigilantes meted out rough justice. It happened in August in the town of Hattiesburg, home to two universities and about 46,000 people. About 53% of the town’s residents are black, and about 42% are white. City officials have declined to make anyone available for interviews because it’s a personnel matter and might involve future litigation. Many details emerged during a civil servi

New top story from Time: ICE Deported a Worker Who Was Injured in the Hard Rock Hotel Partial Collapse in New Orleans

Image
Delmer Ramirez-Palma, a worker who was reportedly injured in the partial collapse of the Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans, La., was deported to Honduras on Friday, a U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson confirms to TIME. According to acting ICE Press Secretary Bryan D. Cox, Ramirez-Palma’s latest application for a stay of removal — which would delay his deportation — was denied by ICE on Oct. 3. Cox confirmed that Ramirez-Palma is a Honduran national. The Times-Picayune reports that Ramirez-Palma had worked construction in the New Orleans area for 18 years and was injured in the highly-publicized construction accident in the Hard Rock Hotel on Oct. 12. He fell several stories as the upper floors of the unfinished building collapsed. The accident killed three workers and injured dozens of others, per CBS. Cox confirmed that ICE arrested Ramirez-Palma at the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans on Oct. 14, where, according to The T

New top story from Time: Climate Activists Invade East German Coal Mines

Image
(LEIPZIG, Germany) — Climate activists protested at open-pit coal mines in eastern Germany, pouring onto the premises to urge the government to immediately halt the use of coal to produce electricity. The news agency dpa reported that police estimated more than 2,000 people took part Saturday at sites near Cottbus and Leipzig and that some of the demonstrators scuffled with police. Three officers were reported slightly injured at the Janschwaelde mine near Cottbus. The mine operators, Leag und Mibrag, filed police reports asking for an investigation and possible charges. Burning coal releases carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas blamed by scientists for global warming. The German government plans to end the use of coal by 2038 and spend 40 billion euros ($44 billion) on assistance for the affected mining regions.

New top story from Time: Rosa Parks Statue to Be Unveiled in Alabama

Image
(MONTGOMERY, Ala.) — A new statue of civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks will be unveiled Sunday in downtown Montgomery. The statue will be unveiled at 1 p.m. at Montgomery Plaza at the Court Street Fountain, the city of Montgomery announced. The unveiling coincides with the anniversary of Parks’ historic Dec. 1, 1955 arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man. Her arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. The statue will be placed approximately 30 feet from the spot where Parks is believed to have boarded the bus, said Ashley Ledbetter, executive director of the Montgomery Area Business Committee for the Arts. Along with the Parks memorial, there will be four granite markers to honor the four women who served as plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle – the landmark case that ruled segregation on Montgomery buses unconstitutional, Ledbetter said. Aurelia Browder, Mary Louise Smith, Susie McDonald and Claudett

Image
On Friday, two people were killed in a stabbing on London Bridge in Central London, which police have labeled a “terror incident.” Three others remain in the hospital. The alleged attacker was shot by the police and died. But more lives might have been lost if not for bystanders who jumped in and subdued the attacker before the police arrived, tackling him to the ground. One of those men was reportedly armed with nothing by a narwhal tusk, and another with just a fire extinguisher. According to media reports , one of the men who sprang into action to stop the attack was a Polish immigrant named Luckasz, who grabbed a Narwhal tusk off the wall of Fishmongers’ Hall and ran at the alleged terrorist. Luckasz reportedly works at Fishmongers’ Hall. According to The Guardian , another member of the public who confronted the alleged attacker was armed with just a fire extinguisher. Speechless. New top story from Time: Black Friday Shooting Causes Lockdown at Syracuse Mall

Image
(SYRACUSE, N.Y.) — Police in Syracuse are looking for a gunman who shot a man in the leg Friday inside a shopping mall. The shooting happened about 7 p.m. and caused a lockdown at the Destiny USA mall. Police said the shooting appeared to stem from an assault or altercation and was not a random act. Investigators said the man’s injuries were not considered to be life threatening. Several Black Friday shoppers posted to social media about hiding inside stores after the gunfire rang out. Police Chief Kenton Buckner told reporters that officers responded to the mall within seconds of the shooting. He said the gunman remained on the loose late Friday.

New top story from Time: The 10 Best Podcasts of 2019

Some of the best podcasts of 2019 spent the year looking backwards—at the ramifications of slavery, at companies that imploded, at important thinkers and celebrities who passed away. Podcast hosts retold their parents’ stories, revisited monumental movies and re-investigated weird and wonderful cultural phenomena. And every single show on this list indulges in nostalgia—even the fiction podcast. Perhaps reaching the end of the decade has made podcasters more reflective and insightful than ever before, or perhaps we as listeners are just craving an explanation for our current moment and turning to the past to find it. Whatever the reason, it made for great listening. Here are TIME’s best podcasts of 2019. 10. Spectacular Failures Lauren Ober recounts the epic meltdowns of companies like MoviePass and Toys “R” Us with a healthy dose of skepticism: when she reports that the implosion of U-Haul was preceded by boardroom brawls between brothers, she jokes, “There’s not enoug

New top story from Time: Why the LDS Church Joined LGBTQ Advocates in Supporting Utah’s Conversion Therapy Ban

Image
When Utah Gov. Gary Herbert proposed a new rule banning licensed therapists from practicing LGBTQ conversion therapy on minors this week, it was supported not only by LGBTQ advocates, but also the Church of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The support of the LDS church, formerly known as the Mormon church, didn’t come easily. The process of banning conversion therapy has taken months of back-and-forth between church leaders, the LGBTQ community and state policy makers. As recently as a month ago, the church opposed the governor’s rule change. Troy Williams, the executive director of LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Utah, tells TIME that the ban is significant because Utah is “ground zero” for conversion therapy. The idea that sexuality could be changed has pervaded among LDS members since at least the 1960s, when LDS apostles published Miracle of Forgiveness , which described gay sex as a “crime against nature” and said that sexual orientation could be changed through prayer. New top story from Time: Iraq’s Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi to Resign Amid Anti-Government Protests

Image
(BAGHDAD) — Iraq’s prime minister said Friday he would submit his resignation to parliament, a day after more than 40 people were killed by security forces and following calls by Iraq’s top Shiite cleric for lawmakers to withdraw support. The move by Adel Abdul-Mahdi 13 months after he took over as prime minister triggered celebrations by anti-government protesters who have been camped out in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square for nearly two months. Young men and women broke out in song and dance as news of his imminent resignation reached the square, the capital’s largest. In a statement, Abdul-Mahdi said he had “listened with great concern” to Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s sermon and made his decision in response to his call and in order to “facilitate and hasten its fulfillment as soon as possible.” “I will submit to parliament an official memorandum resigning from the current prime ministry so that the parliament can review its choices,” he said. Abdul-Mahdi was appointed pr

New top story from Time: The 10 Best TV Shows of 2019

Image
List season has hit particularly hard this year, as the end of our first full decade of social media immersion has culminated in a multi-month spree of ranking and revisiting the likes of which humanity has probably never seen before. So I feel compelled to open by thanking you, the reader, for giving yet another highly subjective hit parade your attention. My hope is that along with a few of the zeitgeisty critical darlings ( Fleabag , Watchmen , Succession ) you’re sure to find in every other top 10 of 2019, this list will point you in the direction of some equally wonderful series ( Vida , David Makes Man , Back to Life ) that haven’t gotten the shine they deserve. What you won’t find here, incidentally, is anything from the initial slate of shows on brand-new streaming services Apple TV+ or Disney+. Whether that disappointment turns out to be a pattern or a fluke, only time will tell. 10. Back to Life (Showtime) Few characters have embodied the saying “you can’t
